Mendocino really is a small town. But it affords hikes, and some unusual views.

She hikes in the rain these days, folks!

Glass Beach, in Fort Bragg (up the road a piece). Actually, this was once a glass factory, situated on the shore, until it was torn down in the early 1900's. After that, all of the glass was just left on the beach. For years, the surf pounded on it, turning the entire beach to small, pebble sized pieces of smooth glass.

At least that's what they tell the tourists...

The real truth is that is was a dump, that, for years, kids would come out and toss bottles at the critters that gathered at the dump. After years, the dump got so bad, they closed it. The glass from the shattered bottles was eroded, and the dump gradually became a beach.

Look carefully; what looks like rocks are actually pieces of glass from an era bygone. All that you see in this picture is worn sea glass.
